-The empire of the sun-

Yes, you thought right! The theme of my project was the ‘sun’. I designed one paper dress and one fabric dress, inspired by all the historic and architectural aspects that are related with the sun.

Obviously, most of us would never wear a paper dress for practical reasons. However, origami has inspired several fashion trends. The same techniques have been used to make pleats and decorative fabric folds in tops, dresses, skirts and many more in order to fold paper.

One of my greatest inspirations for this project was Issey Miyake. He is one of the first designers who explored how origami techniques could influence design. Issey Miyake combines his Japanese heritage and training in Western couture to create modern looking clothes that are both high tech and fun.

After I have finished my research according the shape of the sun, and its meaning by observing some significant circular buildings, I have designed some textiles that include circular motifs. I have printed them in A0 size, and with paper manipulation I created an A line skirt and a top, using the origami technique.

Inspired also by the Japanese fashion designer, I designed my fabric dress. The idea of circular pleats was very fascinating, and after a lot of experimentation, I finally managed to represent it on fabric.

As you can see, for the make up I adopted the Egyptian style, inspired by Cleopatra and the Egyptian sun God Ra. I really couldn’t do it without the help of my talented friend Vaso Yiacoumi.

Take a look, and create you own empire, with you own queen and king!

Kisses,

H.
